Laser Resurfacing Q & A

What is laser resurfacing?

Dr. Lee uses a specialized laser to remove skin in thin layers during laser resurfacing. This may sound scary, but it’s completely safe and effective in helping you get rid of old, damaged skin and prompting the development of new skin cells. Laser resurfacing also triggers the production of supportive proteins, such as collagen, to create a tighter, younger-looking skin surface.

Laser surfacing is offered alone or as part of a comprehensive treatment plan that includes aesthetic injectables and other skin care therapies.

Who should consider laser resurfacing?

If you’re bothered by how aging is affecting your skin, and you’ve experienced sun damage, laser resurfacing is for you. Specific issues addressed by the procedure include:

  • Scars, including acne scars
  • Large pores
  • Wrinkles and fine lines
  • Skin discoloration and hyperpigmentation

Talk to Dr. Lee about your complexion concerns. She can help you determine if laser resurfacing is right for you.

Should I do anything before I undergo laser skin resurfacing?

Prior to your laser resurfacing appointment, you need to avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, and vitamin E supplements for about two weeks. These interfere with blood clotting and can make your recovery last longer. You should also quit smoking at least two weeks prior because it can complicate the procedure.

You may need an antibiotic in advance of the procedure to deter bacterial infections from interfering with skin healing after the treatment.

What should I expect during the laser resurfacing procedure?

Treatment may be directed at specific areas or cover your entire face. Dr. Lee applies a local anesthetic to reduce sensation during the session. You’ll feel heat and prickling as the laser touches your skin. Your treatment for your full face takes about 2 hours. Localized treatments usually last 45-60 minutes.

What happens during recovery from laser resurfacing?

Immediately following the procedure, Dr. Lee bandages your face and provides you with a thorough post-treatment care plan. You’ll be instructed to regularly clean the treated areas multiple times per day and apply a lubricating gel to prevent crusting and scabbing.

You’ll have some swelling after laser skin resurfacing. If it’s severe, Dr. Lee may prescribe steroids to aid in reducing the inflammation. Once a week has passed, the old, damaged layers of skin peel away and new, fresh skin is revealed. Expect healing to take 10-21 days in total.
